Independent review confirms DEG’s strong impact management
An independent review by BlueMark has once again confirmed DEG's strong performance in managing and measuring development impact. The assessment examined how DEG implements the globally recognised Operating Principles for Impact Management (Impact Principles) across its investment processes.
The Impact Principles are an internationally recognised standard for impact management systems. They focus on whether and how impact is systematically planned, managed and monitored throughout the investment cycle. Through regular independent reviews, BlueMark assesses how effectively financial institutions apply these principles in practice.
Top ratings for DEG
In its latest review of DEG's financing activities from its own funds, BlueMark awarded the highest rating level, "Advanced", in six of the eight areas assessed. The review highlighted DEG's strategic management of impact at portfolio level, its systematic assessment of the expected impact of individual investments, and its rigorous approach to measuring and monitoring results.
DEG also received the second-highest rating level, "High", for its use of lessons learned from completed projects to further strengthen its processes.
One area identified for further improvement was the consideration of long-term impact at exit. DEG has already strengthened its approach in this area. Its updated Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) now explicitly incorporates provisions for responsible exits.
Connect programmes continue to improve
DEG's Connect programmes, which were assessed separately by BlueMark, once again achieved a strong result and improved further compared with the previous year. Five of the eight principles received an "Advanced" rating, while the remaining three were rated "High".
Independent validation of an impact-driven approach
The results demonstrate DEG's ability to systematically plan, measure and manage development impact. They also reflect DEG's commitment to continuously strengthening its impact management practices and benchmarking them against internationally recognised standards.
