DEG actively promotes recycling of plastic waste in Bangladesh

Bangladesh’s densely populated capital city of Dhaka is home to more than 17 million people. Every day, thousands of tonnes of waste end up on the city’s streets and in its waters. A significant portion of this is plastic waste.

Dutch company LC Packaging B.V., which specialises in the production of flexible bulk containers, has now established a plastic recycling start-up in Bangladesh together with local partners. This company – GreenBANGLA Recycling – purchases plastic waste, recycles it and processes it for further use. This scheme is co-financed by DEG using funds from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)’s develoPPP.de programme.

Safe jobs – high environmental and social standards

The new company works closely together with local producers of plastic products who, for instance, source granules from recycled plastic from GreenBANGLA.

The production location is certified in accordance with internationally recognised environmental and social standards. 30 graduates from various technical schools are now permanently employed at GreenBANGLA. On joining, they received extensive training, from local and international trainers, on occupational safety, environmental and social standards, safe usage of machinery and cleaning and sorting waste. As well as this, suppliers are given training on how to collect plastic waste safely and effectively.

By paying its staff far higher wages than the local norm and its waste suppliers far higher purchase prices, GreenBANGLA is helping to improve their overall standard of living.
