DEG donates to people in Yemen

DEG staff were invited to vote on where the 2017 Christmas donation should be sent. Their choice was emergency relief in Yemen provided by "Aktion Deutschland Hilft", a coalition of German relief organisations.

Seven million people face acute threat of hunger

In tangible terms, 10,000 euros are being donated to the "Foundation stone for Yemen’s future" project that aims to rebuild 20 schools. Since the conflict in Yemen escalated in March 2015, little or no teaching has taken place in many areas, schools have been occupied, used for military purposes or actually destroyed. More than two million children have had to quit school. Improving the hygiene conditions is part of the school reconstruction programme that is now planned. Girls and boys will have new sanitary facilities. Furthermore, young men and women will receive vocational training in the fields of business or technology with the aim of empowering them to earn their own income.

"The human suffering in Yemen is immense", according to Manuela Roßbach, executive managing director and founder of the coalition "Aktion Deutschland Hilft". "Which is why we are delighted that the staff of DEG are making this commitment – the people are in desperate need!"

Enabling access to education – creating prospects

DEG supports entrepreneurial initiatives in developing and emerging countries, thereby contributing to sustainable development and better living conditions for the people there. "Therefore we are especially pleased that we can create prospects for people with our Christmas donation and help to ensure that girls and boys in Yemen have easier access again to better and fairer education," stated DEG Chairman Bruno Wenn.
