Innovative e-commerce platform launched in Nairobi

How can new products be delivered quickly and efficiently to consumers in African cities? KOKO Networks is a technology company offering an innovative solution to this by developing e-commerce kiosks to modernise distribution channels in African cities. The first network of kiosks developed by KOKO Networks has now been launched in Nairobi.

Consumers register at cloud-connected e-commerce kiosks, so-called KOKOpoints, where they also place their orders, view targeted advertisements, and manage their accounts. Delivery is completed within 24 hours. The cloud-based system handles all payment and supply chain management functions. KOKOpoints are franchised to carefully-selected shops and distributors. DEG has invested in this business via its Up-Scaling programme in order to promote trade of innovative products in African cities.

SmartCook – ethanol instead of charcoal

The first product being offered through KOKOpoint is a modern cooking fuel solution called SmartCook. SmartCook is based on liquid ethanol instead of otherwise frequently used charcoal. Liquid ethanol is safer to handle than charcoal and cheaper than many other alternatives. Customers get ethanol in a canister that can be refilled at the next KOKOpoint. SmartCook thus offers an affordable alternative to cooking with charcoal. In addition it counteracts the high consumption of charcoal, whose production is one of the main factors behind deforestation in Africa.
