Mobile broadband for economic development
The information and telecommunication sector in Ghana has seen a tremendous growth over the past years. Especially the need for fast data services via smartphones, computers and other applications is experiencing strong growth. Also the rapidly growing economy requires fast and reliable network connection to facilitate additional services for residential and commercial customers.
DEG is now providing USD 15m as part of a USD 30m co-investment together with the leading African mezzanine debt provider, Vantage Capital, to the Ghanaian company Surfline Communications Ltd. By deploying the first 4G LTE mobile network in Ghana, Surfline is able to offer high-speed internet connectivity up to 10 times faster than the average speeds offered by the existing mobile network operators at rates that are competitive with existing internet service providers. Surfline can therefore meet the emergent data needs of Ghana’s businesses, government agencies, professional and academic communities and residential users.
