Relief in the event of natural disasters: BSS programme for emergency relief measures

A new BSS programme of DEG supports companies that provide humanitarian aid in an emergency situation.

In recent decades, the number and strength of destructive natural disasters have increased considerably. Developing countries are particularly at risk because of their geographical location and frequent lack of funds to protect themselves efficiently against catastrophes and their consequences. Nepal is no exception: in 2015, the country was hit by a powerful earthquake. Half a million homes had been destroyed and many people lived in camps or in the middle of the street for months.

Providing immediate relief after quake in Nepal

The company Nepal Water & Energy Development Company (NWEDC) launched immediate relief operations after the earthquake. DEG supported the humanitarian relief programme of NWEDC with its Business Support Services and provided funds from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

NWEDC provided temporary shelter and rebuilt schools and health care facilities in nine villages badly affected by the tremor. In addition, it provided the communities with drinking water tanks and building material, set up sanitary facilities and provided basic medical care.

Facilitating the return to self-sufficiency

The new emergency relief programme is aimed at DEG customers also willing to help in critical situations. DEG supports projects that directly benefit the affected population, facilitate the return to self-sufficiency and that can be implemented quickly.

The programme is part of DEG’s Business Support Services (BSS). With BSS, we can help companies increase the developmental impact of their projects. BSS also operate in the fields of corporate governance, staff and supplier training, risk management, environmental and social management, and resource and energy efficiency.
