DEG invests in undertakings that contribute to sustainable development of the local population: We finance investments by enterprises which share our focus on long-term success rather than on short-term profit, and operate accordingly. In this context, environmental protection and compliance with social standards are decisive yardsticks for DEG to become involved. Good corporate governance plays an important role.
We apply this principle when dealing with customers, mandators, and partners it goes without saying that sustainability principles are also applied in-house.
We sustainably promote various target groups and projects in Cologne/NRW.
These include the Cologne emergency food programme "Kölner Tafel" as well as the association “Auf Achse” Treberhilfe e.V., which looks after juvenile homeless persons and that we support with monetary and in-kind donations. We furthermore support local institutions with in-kind donations (furniture and IT equipment). Once a year, DEG employees support charitable projects within the framework of the "Kölner Freiwilligentage" (Cologne Volunteers Days), organised by the Cologne volunteer agency.
We are moreover committed to promoting general awareness of entrepreneurial development cooperation in our immediate neighbourhood and to establishing ties to our partner countries. We, for instance, support activities of the Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum and the free theatre Im Bauturm, promote young artists from DEG partner countries and provide support to the new talents art biennale.

In-house Environmental Protection
The prevention of negative environmental impacts is the primary objective for our own in-house activities. Environmental aspects are therefore explicitly taken into account in the Management Board's decisions.
DEG's office building sets standards in the use of new, energy-saving technologies. Our headquarters is one of the high-rise office buildings with the highest eco-standards in the world. The German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) awarded a gold seal of quality to DEG’s headquarters thanks to the building's excellent consumption figures. A number of innovative solutions such as temperature, lighting and shutter control enable a considerably more efficient energy use than in comparable buildings.
DEG and KfW have concluded an agreement on the provision of long-term refinancing funds for DEG by KfW. KfW refinances by issuing bonds on the capital market. The promotional policies and internal organisation are directed towards sustainable action. Along with the good credit rating of its own bonds, a good sustainability rating is also important as it represents an external quality label.
KfW's own investment practices are directed towards sustainability. In 2006 it signed the UN Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI). Sustainability criteria are incorporated by KfW in the investment decisions of securities management. Issuers with investments in enterprises with untenable business activities according to its exclusion criteria are entirely excluded from the investment universe.
