Energy Efficiency Award 2010 for Saigon TanTec Ltd.

DEG promotes integrated energy and environment management in a leather production facility in Vietnam

For its energy-efficient production facility in Vietnam which was co-financed by DEG in 2009, the company Saigon TanTec Ltd. (TanTec) received the Energy Efficiency Award 2010. On 20 April 2010, Federal Minister for Economics Rainer Brüderle presented the company with the second prize on the occasion of Hannover Messe (Hannover trade fair). At the new production plant, TanTec has implemented an integrated energy and environment management. DEG co-financed this measure with funds from Technical Assistance.

For the production of one square metre of leather, Saigon TanTec only utilises two-thirds of the energy amount customary of the industry. This was achieved with the help of a strategic energy and environment management focussed on innovative technologies and the efficient utilisation of energy, water and chemicals. Moreover, the energy-saving production saves around 2,700 tonnes of CO2 every year. At the same time, the water and chemicals consumption could be reduced by 50 and 15 per cent, respectively.

The decision of the jury consisting of representatives from politics, industry and media was taken under consideration of the following five criteria: increase in energy efficiency, contribution to climate protection, profitability, transferability and degree of innovation.

The Energy Efficiency Award 2010 was awarded for the fourth time this year by Deutsche Energie-Agentur GmbH (dena) in cooperation with the Deutsche Messe (German trade fair). The international competition is to illustrate how companies can lower their cost with the help of energy efficiency measures, thereby boosting their profitability and simultaneously making a contribution to climate protection.
